We are looking for iconic photographs of Star Island – moments that capture the essence of your experience on Star Island. Anything from a beautiful sunset to a jump off the pier, if a photo captures your Shoaler heart in some way then we would love to see it!

These photos would be considered for use in Star Island publications or our Web pages, so please only submit photos for which you can give permission for publication. Please note that we cannot guarantee using all photos submitted for a variety of reasons, and if we would like to use your submitted photo then we will contact you – and you will be credited when/if your photos are used.

Email photos in .jpg format to Jon, our office assistant, at email hidden; JavaScript is required. Alternatively, if you have several photos or they are large, upload them to a Web site like Picasa or Snapfish and share them with him. If your photo is already on Facebook then just send him a nudge in the right direction.

Are you longing to help with the Starry Night fundraising event but live too far from Portsmouth? No problem! You can host Starry Night in your own neck of the woods. All you need is a place, a time and date, and a theme. How about a coffee house with desserts and open mike? A pot luck supper? A pancake breakfast? A wine and cheese tasting? Thanksgiving pie baking contest? There are lots of possibilities for bringing Shoalers of all ages together for fun while raising some funds for Star Island.

We’ve already had one event: special thanks to Pelican Adam Shapiro who hosted this year’s first Starry Night, “A Great Day” in May. His outdoor battle of the bands raised about $300 from the Pels and friends in his neighborhood in Hartford.

The Star Island Corp., in cooperation with Sam Adams Brewery, is proud to announce Starry Night 2011, our third annual event celebrating art, hops and harvest flavors.

This year, Starry Night returns on November 19 to the Discover Portsmouth Center with a ceramics exhibition by the Banks Gallery in Portsmouth and also features a select group of jewelers showing their unique hand-crafted pieces. RAIN for the Sahel and Sahara will also display their work. RAIN is an international non-governmental organization that works with women artisans of the Sahel and Sahara to help them achieve economic self-sufficiency.

The evening will also feature the savory Mediterranean appetizers of Café Nostimo in Portsmouth as well as a choice selection of Sam Adams beer for tasting. Musical entertainment will be provided by jazz duo Kemp Harris and Scotty Vercoe who bring their own spin on genre classics.

Tickets are $30/person in advance or $40 at the door. VIP Preview tickets are $50/person and allow admission at 4:00 p.m. and early access to the jewelry and ceramics displays for the ideal opportunity to view and purchase the best pieces before someone else does. The evening will be held at the Discover Portsmouth Center, on the corner of Middle and Islington streets.
