International Affairs is a week of vitality and traditions, as newcomers join Shoalers returning to their “spirit’s home” for a provocative exchange of ideas, the vigor of friendships new and familiar, and appreciation of the Island’s natural beauty.
And always international issues educate and inspire attendees to better find their way in the ever-changing patterns of our world.

There is emerging international consensus that the world’s challenges in health care access and delivery will be solved only through the empowerment and improved health of women and children. Our speakers will address how we might confront these complex challenges, and engage conferee in both thoughtful and provocative discussions. Our invited speakers will address issues intergral to the theme, including maternal and child health as a human right, the exponential power of education and leadership training for girls; the disproportionate impact on children of accelerating, widespread drug resistance in tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV/AIDS; the role of US research universities and NGOs in disease prevention and health care delivery in developing countries; the impact of microfinance and other social entrepreneurial efforts; and the complexities of international aid and donor funding.
The week also presents us with nourishment for the spirit, with morning and evening worship services, engaging hands-on workshops in art, music and writing, and a lively social hour each day. There is time for sports and games, time for conversations about the world and our lives, time to roam the Island . . . and time to relax and ponder the sky, the sea and the stars. IA Week is well regarded as a conference for families with a thriving youth program.

Young People’s Program: This enriching program engages young people from 3 to those just having graduating high school. Supervised care for children starting at 18 months is available each morning.
