Volunteer Information – Spring 2017
Welcome to Star Island Spring Open-up Volunteering! Please read the information below to get an idea of springtime volunteer work at Star Island. Some changes have been made since last spring.
Each spring volunteers help the Star Island staff prepare the island for summer conferences. Star Island Spring Open Up volunteer positions are physical in nature.
Requirements can include, but are not limited to, lifting up to 50 pounds at a time. If you have difficulties with climbing stairs or lifting objects, consider volunteering in the summer when we have less physically demanding work available for volunteers, and when we are also very grateful to have volunteer help.
Volunteer Position Descriptions
Grounds work includes mowing the lawn, killing poison ivy and simple landscaping work. Assisting our groundskeeper may require use of power equipment for mowing and weed whacking.
Housekeeping and Laundry
Housekeeping is one of the largest areas of need on the island. Expect to be dusting, sweeping, mopping, and washing walls, windows, and furniture.
Help take care of the island’s many flower and vegetable gardens! Tasks are varied and may include weeding, selecting and cutting flowers for floral arrangements, starting seeds, transplanting, harvesting veggies for meals, and watering. The island is also home to a small poultry flock and, if interested, volunteers may be involved in everyday poultry care and management: feeding, watering, and cleaning the coop.
Brute Strength work: moving and hauling
If you choose this work, you might be helping the truck crew move the food from the dock to the kitchen, for example. There is always a lot of work requiring strength on the island!
Star Island has some beautiful antique furniture that needs care and repair. This summer we will be refinishing furniture from the Oceanic second floor. Interested? This is a great job for those who don’t want to do a lot of lifting and moving.
In the spring, winterized systems are not yet up and running, and facilities are limited. This limits the number of volunteers that may be accommodated. For this reason, volunteer assignments are need based and subject to discretion – please also consider volunteering on Star during the summer, or during the end of season in August and September, when Star’s need for volunteers often rises.
For the two weeks before the conference season, the work will focus on deep cleaning of living spaces. For the first three weekends we seek people who have volunteered before during the spring, have professional skills in areas needed, and are familiar with Star Island and the pre-season work. The last two weeks are open to experienced volunteers and also open to people who haven’t volunteered before.
While there will be time to relax and socialize in the evening, you should come prepared to put in 8 hours of old-fashioned hard work each day.
All volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
We seek people who want to give something back to the island they love. This is no vacation, but is a wonderful way to experience Star Island with others who share that love.
The deadline to apply is March 19, 2017. We will have our volunteer crew lists finalized by mid-April.
UPDATE: Our spring volunteer application is closed. There are several spots open during the weekends of May 12-14 and May 19-21. Please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to sign up for these weekends. Information on conference season volunteering will be available by mid-May.
If you have any questions now, feel free to contact Ally Miner, Assistant Conference Center Director, at email@example.com
Star Island depends on volunteers who love the island to keep it well-maintained. We deeply appreciate your interest in volunteering, and hope to see you at Star Island in 2017.
