Theme: Living Your Life by the Golden Rule
At the heart of all world religions is this very basic tenant, which we identify as The Golden Rule. Leviticus 19:18 states "... love your neighbor as yourself", while Matthew 7:12 says, "... do to others what you would have them do to you." Confucius said in The Analects: "Never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself." Muhammad admonished his followers to "Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you." Even Jewish moral law is illustrated by the Rabbi Hillel in saying "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow."
We need to remember the power of this sacred admonition to practice an ethic of reciprocity. Tolerance, while a laudable goal in the face of hatred and fear, is only a stepping stone toward a deeper, more profound understanding of how to live in this world, which is being torn apart by our forgetting the Golden Rule. The Rev. Steven Winkler will help us to explore how we can remember the Golden Rule and apply it as we go about our daily lives.
Rev. Winkler was called as Senior Pastor of the Protestant Community Church, in Medford Lakes, NJ in May, 2004. He was ordained in 1972 in the United Church of Christ (UCC), came to the PCC after serving churches in Vermont and Ohio. He and his wife Heather are the proud parents of Jeremiah, Gabriel, and Zoe. We hope you will visit his website at www.protestantcommunitychurch.org.
