New England Heritage Immigration: Shaping New England

August 24, 2019 to August 31, 2019

Explore how several cultures have shaped New England’s way of life, from the early emigration of the British, to the subsequent capture and enslavement of Africans, to the influx of the Irish, especially during the great famine, to the wave of Italian and French-Canadian immigrants after the Civil War.
Each of these distinct cultures, along with many others, have contributed to the New England’s rich history and traditions. Acting as fishing ship pilots, stone carvers, policemen and firemen and working in logging camps, mills and factories, immigrants helped make 19th century New England the center of one of the most industrialized and prosperous nations on earth. Spend summer days turning back the clock with expert speakers, workshops and activities that highlight immigrant history in New England. Play bocce ball on Star Island’s expansive lawn, then enjoy an ethnic cuisine demonstration. Settle into a rocking chair on the porch of the historic Oceanic Hotel gazing out to sea. Join the candlelit procession to the 200-year-old chapel on the hill. Be enriched and enchanted at the 2019 New England Heritage conference.

Returning to Star? Check out our Community Building Program!

We want our conferences to continue to grow, so we’re asking our Star Island family members to bring someone with you to Star this year. Here’s how it works:

1) Find that person (or more than one person) that you feel would be able to best contribute to the community on Star Island.Consider people in your extended family, congregation members, co-workers or other personal networks!

2) Nominate that person by filling out this form.

3) Star will cover 30% of the room and board for your new Shoaler, provided they attend the full duration of the conference!

4) We’ll also kick in $50 toward your room and board, provided you attend the full duration of the conference! (if you bring 4 or more new people, we’ll give you $125!)
