On Your Mark. Get Set. BAKE! Make pastry and share it with a friend. Roll croissants while you laugh and tell stories. Knead dough and build community, or just come along for the conversation! Join us in a week long “Baking Boot Camp” under the guidance of master baker and long-time shoaler, Mary Dean. We will use our hands to create extraordinary treats as we explore the power of food to nourish body, spirit, and friendship. Bakers and baked good appreciators are all welcome. In Chapel each morning we will continue this exploration of spiritual nourishment as we focus on some of the great life lessons and teachings that happened around food in the Bible. If you think your family table has drama – wait until you hear some of these stories!

Youth Programming
Children’s programming takes place each morning led by our capable team of trained children’s staff with learning based on our conference theme, activities and games, and island exploration.
Theme Speaker
Mary Dean has had a lifetime hunger to know God with head, heart, and hands. A graduate of Andover Newton Theological School and Connecticut Culinary Institute, Mary founded a bakery program in Connecticut that teaches job skills to at-risk youth and people with disabilities. Mary’s newest project is a social enterprise called Love and Pastry. This project explores the power of food to connect, empower, heal, bring joy, and deliver hope. Mary is also a certified plant-based chef, cancer survivor, wife to beloved Chris, and mom to Sam and Skyler. She lives in Rocky Hill, CT.
Minister of the Week
Rev. Janet Hatfield Legro, is a long time Shoaler and UCC minister. She currently serves on the pastoral staff at First Presbyterian Church in Richmond, VA. and is a spiritual director with the Richmond Hill Community. She has served in UCC, Presbyterian, Episcopal and Quaker communities with a focus on spiritual development and community engagement. Janet and her husband, Jeff, have two daughters, Maddie (27) and Meg (24).
Program Fee
$125 per adult, $100 per youth under 12.
