Island Watercolor Intensive: Wine Dark, Bottle Green, or Sapphire Blue: What COLOR is your ocean?

July 14, 2018 to July 20, 2018

New this year: the conference is a full-week and we’ll have a studio-space designated solely for our use!

Painting Star’s ever-changing skies and seas and clarity of light and color, we join a long tradition of Isles of Shoals artists. This year we’ll learn how to carve out a wave and focus on the interaction between rock and sea. We’ll incorporate some drawing sessions, hone traditional watercolor techniques such as washes, glazing, and wet on wet, and try some experimental techniques. Additionally we’ll introduce drawing and painting the figure in the landscape. Personalized instruction is primarily geared to beginners and intermediate students, and an important part of the experience is sharing and supporting each other’s work in frequent group critiques. Advanced watercolorists are encouraged to join classes and group critiques as desired; they will receive individual critiques.

A full week watercolor workshop with five days of instruction, group and individual critiques, and sketching on-site on Star and on Smuttynose Islands, plus an independent painting day mid-week to process and work at one’s own pace, sharing with each other during a special Happy Hour. There will be time to relax, read, explore, and enjoy Lime Rickeys on the porch while watching boats come and go in the harbor. On our last afternoon we’ll mount an exhibition on the porch for everyone on island.
