Shoalscapes: The Art of the Isles of Shoals

Since the 19th century, the stark beauty of the Isles of Shoals has lured artists to their rocky shores and continues to draw creative souls to their spiritual home to this very day, 10 miles out to sea. What is it that called to them and is calling to them still?

Join us for a 5 day 4 night stay on Star Island for a fascinating look at how artists have recorded the raw beauty of these tiny islands for close to two centuries. From paint to poetry, every artist interprets these islands their own unique style. From the classic great painters such as Childe Hassam and J. Appleton Brown to those who arrive with a simple sketchbook or to participate in art workshops, we will see the Isles through their eyes, hear what inspired them and learn to see our beloved Shoals in a whole new light!

In addition, as always there will be plenty of things to do from visiting our museum and library in Vaughn Cottage to exploring the island’s marine life and ecology in Rutledge Marine Lab. Enjoy social hours, ice cream and treats from the snack bar, an art workshop, our traditional Candle Light Chapel in the historic old Gosport Chapel and as much quiet time as you wish, sipping lime rickeys in a rocking chair on the porch, visiting with friends old and new and simply gazing out to sea.

Weather permitting there will be an optional walking tour on Appledore to see the locations of several of Childe Hassam’s paintings. ( note: there will be an extra charge for this trip )
