VOLUNTEER
For those interested in contributing to the work that goes into running the island, there are opportunities for volunteering alongside our island staff. You provide the elbow grease, and we’ll provide the boat transportation, a bed, hearty and delicious meals, and the wonderful community of our friendly hard-working staff. Below you’ll find details about our various volunteer programs.

Our Volunteer Programs Include:
Open Up Volunteering
Our Spring Volunteers help awaken Star Island from its winter slumber! We accept volunteers from early May through early June who can work Friday afternoon - Sunday afternoon or Monday morning - Friday afternoon. Typical work assignments include, deep cleaning spaces, grounds and landscaping tasks, dishwashing help, and moving heavy items.
In May and early June the island is operating in a limited capacity. This means water is only running in some areas and many buildings have not been opened up yet. If you’re looking for a more rustic experience, this is a unique opportunity to experience the island!
General Summer Season Volunteering
We welcome volunteers to work alongside our seasonal staff (Pelicans) from mid June through mid September. Work assignments include tasks such as, folding laundry, cleaning guest areas, landscaping and grounds work, dining room help, and rounding to fill in on Pelican crews.
Much of the island work requires the ability to lift heavy items and climb stairs. If you are interested in lighter work, please let us know in your application and we’ll do our best to find a task to fit your needs!
Gift Shop + Bookstore
The Island of Shoals Association operates both the Gift Shop and Bookstore on Star Island from mid June through mid September. Volunteers must be available for a full week (Sunday - Sunday). Typical work includes managing transactions with a cash register and Square device, carrying items from the third floor of the hotel to the Lobby, and customer service with guests.
Rutledge Marine Lab
The Rutledge Marine Lab is run by the Island Naturalist and creates an education experience for guests. Volunteers must be available to work for a full week (Sunday - Sunday).
Island Gardens
Mainland Volunteering
In the summer, we accept volunteers who are willing to help at the in-town dock with loading food and luggage onto the island boats.
In the winter, we have volunteer opportunities in the Star Island Office helping with large mailings and winter events.
How do I become a Volunteer?
- Star Island volunteers must be 18 years or older
- Volunteers work 7-8 hours per day in exchange for room and board
- Volunteers eat with the staff and are encouraged to spend their off time in staff areas. Volunteering is not an avenue to attending a conference for free. If you’re interested in affordable options for attending conferences, check out our financial grant program.
- Volunteer availability is dependent on island work needs and available guest rooms.
Step Two: Receive an Assignment
You will be contacted by the Volunteer Coordinator (volunteer@starisland.org ) with the dates you've been accepted and your job assignment.

Star Island does not provide parking for volunteers or employees mid June - mid September. It's essential to make your plan for parking ahead of time, as you will not be able to park at the dock.
For up to date local options, check back in May 2025.
Step Five: Pack
From June - September we will supply you with bed linens, blankets, and towels. Suggested packing includes:
- Clothing for all weather conditions (sun, rain, wind, cool temperatures)

What to expect when you get to the island...
When you arrive to the Island you will be greeted by a member of our staff and they will help orient you. They will help you find out your housing assignment and let you know when and where to meet your crew to start working.
