As part of global work day on 10/10/10 to bring attention to climate change, Star’s close up crew as part of the P.O.S.S. E. (pelicans on star supporting the environment) planted garden. 350.org’s Global Work Party was a worldwide event supporting environmental initiatives. Conference Updates

New LGBT Family and Friends Conference

Star Island Corp is very pleased to announce the new LGBT Family and Friends Conference which will take place from Saturday, August 27 to Friday, September 2, 2011. This conference is for all families—especially gays, lesbians, bisexual, and/or transgender, their families, and their friends. All are welcome — singles, couples without children, couples with children, groups of friends, grandparents, and almost any other family configuration that you create. Read more…

On the Island

Pontine Theatre Isles of Shoals play

The Pontine Theatre will be performing scenes from their Isles of Shoals show on Sunday 24 October at 2pm at the Discover Portsmouth Center. Doug Nelson (a collector & dealer in art of the Isles of Shoals) will be doing a presentation before the show.

This is a wonderful production that evokes the era when Celia Thaxter hosted some of the great writers and artists in her home on Appledore and features Nathanial Hawthorne (Greg Gathers) and Celia Thaxter (Marguerite Matthews).

Shoaler Art Show at Nahcotta Gallery

Star Island Winter Caretaker, Alexandra de Steiguer, is showing a new series from the Isles of Shoals called “Stories.” Please visit Nahcotta in Portsmouth, from September 30 through October 31, 2010. The opening reception will be Friday, October 1st. from 5 to 8pm.

Alex will also be showing her photographs at this year’s Starry Night fundraiser to benefit Star Island on November 20.

Star Island Melodies

Andy Bowen, long-time Shoaler, has brought back Star Island Melodies, a beloved songbook known to many who were on Star Island when Fred McGill was about. Andy has many fond memories of Star Island in the mid-1950s and the song book, given to him by Fred McGill, has been an important resource for Andy ever since.

Geocaching

Ellen Campbell got hooked on Geocaching last January, and this June she introduced Shoalers to Geocaching and Star Island to Geocachers. Geocaching is treasure hunting via GPS devices and is based on a website: Geocaching.com. Anyone can play and there is no fee to sign up for the list of hidden caches. The treasures are small items that fit into containers that are in turn tucked into crevices, nooks in stone walls, hollow logs. The hunters sign log books at the site of the actual cache and record them as well on the web site, where others can read about their experience. Read more…
